Right out of college, I got a job working for a cell phone provider. I excelled in my customer service position, so naturally the store manager thought, "this girl would be great if we transitioned her into sales". I was great at connecting with customers and building trust, but I was not great at convincing myself that I needed to sell something to a customer that they did not truly need.
In reality, I knew I had the ability to upsell higher-priced packages, but I didn’t feel comfortable encouraging people to invest in something that didn’t truly add meaningful value for them. As someone who truly believes in the “let your conscience be your guide” mindset and has a complete inability to lie, I could practically feel Jiminy Cricket on my shoulder every time I found myself in a situation where I was expected to upsell a customer.
But now, behind the MWLC, I have no problem with my pitch because I have seen the benefit of the council membership firsthand. In the two years I have been part of this organization, I have watched women from every stage of the mortgage industry come together to support each other. No one is looking at titles, production numbers, company size, or rank. Women are showing up to help one another grow, share knowledge, and create opportunities.
Personally, being part of this council has changed me. It has helped me grow exponentially. It has made me more confident. It has pushed me outside of my comfort zone and given me a sense of purpose that I did not expect.
A crucial moment that started my journey with Mortgage Women, and really fueled my passion for keeping this outlet alive and well, was my first time attending the Mortgage Star conference. Last year, I was even able to have a speaking session, which made it a full circle moment for me.
With that, I encourage you to not only consider coming to our event in July, but also take advantage of the couple of weeks you have left to nominate a woman in the industry who you think should be recognized as a "Mortgage Star." Please trust that whoever is chosen, myself and Melissa, along with many of the Advisory Board members, will be in NOLA to greet them and treat them as special guests of the council. Every little bit we can do to lift each other up as women in this industry matters.
Many of you already believe in this as passionately as we do. We just need the rest of the industry to believe in it too.
With that, I will say that I am never content with our offerings, and I am constantly pushing for more. We have just mobilized our Advisory Board with the launch of four subcommittees: Recognition, Social Media Engagement, Member Growth, and Diversity and Community Involvement. These subcommittees, along with our other ongoing initiatives, are geared toward our 2026 goals. Those goals include supporting industry recognition and celebration, expanding connection and engagement while growing the MWLC community, strengthening industry impact, and exploring new ways to stay connected.
So my passion pitch to you is this: Share our message. Join the council if you haven't or share it with a friend who should. Send me a message about how you can contribute. Activate sponsor support so we can continue to give back to women in this community through mentorship programs, educational resources, special events, and more.
Women still need more reach in this space, and it takes a sky full of stars to truly illuminate it.
