Community Over Competition

In less than a month, I'll be heading to my next Mortgage Women event, and the excitement continues to build. Registrations are rolling in, we're working closely with our Advisory Board — many of whom will be joining us in New Orleans — and we're putting the finishing touches on plans to celebrate the 2026 Mortgage Stars.

The event I'm talking about is our biggest of the year: Mortgage Star National.

Every July, we gather at the Hotel Monteleone in New Orleans (perhaps not the ideal month for humidity, but completely worth it nonetheless). Of all the conferences I've attended throughout my career, this one remains my favorite. I've never left a room feeling more inspired, empowered, and connected than I do after attending Mortgage Star National.

It's also the first conference I ever brought my mother to so she could see her daughter in action. Being involved in this conference makes me extremely proud, and her response to the experience was heartwarming, to say the least. As we finalize plans for this year's gathering, I’m also reminded of the incredible sense of community that we witnessed at our MWLC Meet Up in Irvine last month.

One topic that has surfaced repeatedly in our working groups and conversations is the importance of supporting one another. We all know that gender bias continues to exist within our industry. But another challenge we don't talk about enough is the tendency for women to be overly critical of other women.

Too often, the success of one woman is viewed through the lens of competition rather than celebration. We can fall into the trap of believing that someone else's achievement somehow diminishes our own opportunities. The reality is quite the opposite. There is room for all of us at the table, and we can always save another seat.

That's a lesson that feels especially relevant during Pride Month, a reminder that inclusion isn't just about making room for people; it's about ensuring they feel welcome, valued, and that they truly belong once they get there. The strongest communities are built when people are empowered to show up as their authentic selves and are supported when they do.

Imagine how much stronger our industry could be if we spent less time comparing ourselves to one another and more time cheering each other on. What if we chose community over competition? What if we celebrated every promotion, every milestone, and every success story as proof of what is possible rather than a reminder of what we haven't yet achieved?

I'm sure many of the women reading this have had the experience of their biggest adversary being another woman standing nearby. But I can tell you this: I didn't see any of that negativity in Irvine. What I saw was women supporting women. And not only that, but men supporting women as well. I saw connections being made, camaraderie growing, and a community forming that I can proudly say I helped facilitate. I saw hope for an incrementally better tomorrow for women in mortgage through small acts of kindness and acceptance.

If you're looking for a place where you can grow your community, find support, and be surrounded by people who understand your journey, I invite you to join the Mortgage Women Leadership Council. And if you can make it to New Orleans on July 8, I highly encourage you to experience Mortgage Star National for yourself.

Because when the challenges of this industry start to feel overwhelming, sometimes all it takes is finding your people to restore your sense of hope for the future. In New Orleans, there will be a community waiting for you that will celebrate your success right alongside their own. And hey, maybe a connection you make there will be the key to your next career milestone.
